The story behind the cup...

Gatina, Kenya (Washed)

The Gatina Washing Station lies just a few kilometers outside the town of Karatina in Nyeri County. This station receives coffee cherries from 790 dedicated smallholder producers, of which 30% are women.

The coffee grown here is often termed ‘garden coffee’ as each producer has a very small amount of land to grow their crop. Due to this, there is a large focus on speciality coffee cultivation, which adds value to each cherry picked. Families will work together to grow and pick coffee cherries, selecting only the ripest fruit before delivering it directly to Gatina.

On arrival at Gatina, the cherries are pulped and left to ferment overnight, relying on water drawn from the fresh rivers flowing through the majestic Mt. Kenya and Aberdares Mountains. Following fermentation the coffee is then washed, soaked and laid out on raised drying beds to bask in the sun.

In the end cup you can expect refreshing flavours of red berries with a dash of juicy lime.
